US Open champion Osaka withdraws from French Open

Naomi Osaka, who won her second US Open title last weekend, has withdrawn from the French Open due to injury.
The French Open in Paris is scheduled to start on 27 September.

“I won’t be able to play at the French Open,” Osaka said in a statement on Friday.

“My hamstring is still sore so I won’t have enough time to prepare for the clay. These two tournaments came too close to each other for me.”

The 22-year-old Japanese star’s left hamstring was wrapped in tape when she beat Victoria Azarenka in the US Open final at Flushing Meadows on Saturday night.

Osaka, who won the Australian Open in 2019, has never progressed beyond the third round at Roland Garros.
World number three Osaka joins world number one Ashleigh Barty in missing the tournament. The Australian announced earlier that she would not defend her title, pulling out of the tournament because of coronavirus restrictions.

Roger Federer, the men’s 20-time Grand Slam winner, will also miss the French Open as he recovers from knee surgery.
The Paris tournament was earlier scheduled to start on 24 May but was postponed as a result of COVID-19.
