Solskjaer happy with Man United squad, praises ‘charismatic’ Mourinho

MANCHESTER United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has backed his current squad to succeed while dismissing attempts to fan the flames of a row with his predecessor Jose Mourinho, who now manages Tottenham Hotspur.

Only Donny van De Beek has been added to the United squad this season but Solskjaer insists he will be happy with what he has even if no new players arrive before the 5 October transfer deadline day.

“We are planning,” the former United striker said on Friday during his pre-match press conference ahead of Sunday’s Premier League fixture against Mourinho’s Tottenham.

“We have players here who we believe in. The transfer window is still open for a little while. The club has been working, they know my view. We are here to strengthen it in the long term.

“Well, I’m not gonna go into the transfer window now, of course all my focus is on Sunday’s game. “The club’s always working hard to have as strong as possible a squad and if something happens, in or out, you’ll get to know.”

Solskjaer said he had no problem with Mourinho’s jibe at Manchester United’s knack of winning penalties and has insisted that he has “ultimate respect” for his predecessor.

After United required a late Bruno Fernandes penalty to beat Brighton last weekend, Mourinho suggested that Solskjaer would prefer a “22-yard-box” rather than the regulation 18-yard penalty area.

However, ahead of Mourinho’s return to Old Trafford with Tottenham Hotspur, Solskjaer refused to continue a row with the Portuguese.

“No, the rules are as they are in football, I didn’t really think more about that one,” he said.

“It’s just more for you and the media, it’s important that we have a bit of entertainment as well. Jose has throughout the years given us some fantastic moments in football, in press conferences and on the pitch.

“As a striker I didn’t mind how big the box was when I got in there, it was just a strike on goal.”

Solskjaer added: “We are in strange times at the moment. You’ve got to sometimes have a bit of fun as well. It was a couple of innocent comments.

“For me Jose’s a very charismatic coach and manager and I’ve enjoyed in the media talking to him, enjoyed watching him.

“He’s a winner but I’m not one of these that really go into all these mind games, I’ve got ultimate respect for him as a coach and results and everything he’s given football.”
