Iwobi sparkles as Everton outclass Brighton, go top

SUPER Eagles forward Alex Iwobi was in brilliant form on Saturday, playing a key role in Everton’s 4-2 Premier League win over Brighton at Goodison Park.

The former Arsenal star was involved in Everton’s last two goals as Carlo Ancelotti’s side shot to the top of the table.

Iwobi, who came on for the injured Richarlison in the 25th minute, assisted the third goal and played the defence-splitting pass that led to the fourth goal, both scored by James Rodriguez.

Everton took the lead in the 16th minute through a towering header from the in-form Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who bagged his sixth league goal in four matches.

Brighton pulled level in the 41st minute when Neal Maupay scored after Jordan Pickford had spilled a simple ball.

The parity was not for long though. Yerry Mina headed Everton ahead again on the stroke of half-time, giving the hosts a 2-1 lead into the break.

Rodriguez made it 3-1 seven minutes into the second half, sweeping home Iwobi’s cross from the opposite wing.

The Colombia star wrapped up the scoring for Everton in the 70th minute, netting from Abdoulaye Doucoure’s cross after Iwobi had played the French midfielder in with a through ball.

Brighton were unrelenting though and they kept creating chances. They reduced the deficit in the 90th minute with Yves Bissouma’s shot from the edge of the box.

The win helped maintain Everton’s 100 percent start to the season, giving them 12 points from four games.

Iwobi is in the Nigeria squad for the two friendly matches against Algeria and Tunisia on 9 October and 13 October in Austria.
