In-form Onuachu replaces Osimhen for Algeria, Tunisia friendlies

Genk of Belgium striker Paul Onuachu has been called up as replacement for Victor Osimhen for Super Eagles’ two friendly matches later in October, Naija Times reports.

The Nigerian team faces Algeria and Tunisia on 9 October and 13 October in Austria in preparation for their 2022 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers in November.

The Nigeria Football Federation announced the changes to the squad on Sunday but did not give any reasons.

“@victorosimhen9 has been excused from @NGSuperEagles’ games against Algeria and Tunisia. His replacement is Paul Onuachu. #Team9jaStrong #SoarSuperEagles,” the NFF tweeted on Sunday.

There are strong indications that Osimhen is facing travel restrictions as a result of the positive cases of COVID-19 among his Napoli teammates and officials.

Onuachu has been in fine form this season, scoring seven goals in Belgian Pro League matches.

The tall striker has seven Super Eagles caps and has scored one goal for the national team.
