‘Very happy’ Onazi joins Danish club SønderjyskE

Nigeria midfielder Ogenyi Onazi has made a surprise switch to the Danish top division, Naija Times reports.

Danish club SønderjyskE announced the Super Eagles star’s arrival on Sunday on their official website.

“SønderjyskE Fodbold has signed a contract with the 27-year-old Nigerian midfielder Ogenyi Onazi, who in addition to 51 national team appearances and World Cup experience has been in clubs such as SS Lazio and Trabzonspor,” the club stated.

“The 27-year-old Nigerian midfielder has signed a contract with SønderjyskE for the rest of the current season with an option for an extension of two more seasons.”

Sports director Hans Jørgen Haysen said he was pleased that SønderjyskE was able to attract a player with Onazi’s impressive pedigree.

“He is a player with a crazy CV, and he has played lots of matches in Serie A and in the Turkish league as well as a lot of national matches,” Haysen said.

“When he is standing here today, it is due to the injury that put a dent in the wheel for him in 2019, and that is our luck, because otherwise we would not have been close to picking up a player with that CV.

“We believe that we can get him back on track, but we are also aware that it may take a few weeks before he is back at full speed for 90 minutes. He has been without a club in recent months, so now he must get back his form in training and get match-fit again, but fortunately we have a skilled staff that can help him on the right path, and we believe he will be a big win for us – not least in the slightly longer run.”

Onazi says he is looking forward to continuing his career in SønderjyskE and the Danish Superligaen.

“I am very happy to have signed here in SønderjyskE, and I am grateful that the club has given me this opportunity,” the 2014 World Cup star and 2013 Africa  Cup of Nations winner said. “I hope I can make a difference and my ambition is to help the team finish as high as possible in the table.

“I am a player who likes to take responsibility and work hard for things, and I will do the same here in SønderjyskE. I am very dedicated to this task and I look forward to playing for the club.”

Onazi passed his medical at SønderjyskE, who finished 11th in the 16-team Superligaen last year, and will wear the No.8 jersey.

The battling midfielder has played 110 games for SS Lazio and 79 games for Trabzonspor but struggled badly with injuries last season, playing only 12 times in all competitions.
