Thugs, not protesters attacked my convoy, says Oyetola, dissociates self from killings
THE attack on Governor Adegboyega Oyetola in Osogbo on Saturday by armed hoodlums was an assassination attempt, according to the Osun State Commissioner for Information and Civic Orientation, Mrs. Funke Egbemode.
Egbemode, who was also at the scene of the incident, claimed, “It was an assassination attempt. This was certainly beyond the #EndSARS protest. The people who launched the attack were not protesters at all.
While addressing the #EndSARS protesters at Olaiya junction in Osogbo the state capital, Governor Oyetola was attacked by hoodlums, who were armed with cutlasses and sticks.
The governor was immediately ferried away from the scene by his security details but some vehicles in his convoy were damaged from stones thrown by the attackers.
Oyetola, in his broadcast to the people of the state yesterday in Osogbo, declared, “my attackers were not the genuine youths who were protesting under the aegis of #EndSARS.”
He, however, dissociated himself from those killed in the mayhem explaining that, he joined the protest from Okefia and walked to Olaiya junction, where he addressed the peaceful protesters before the process was hijacked by hoodlums.
“The deaths from yesterday’s protest was not in any way linked to me as my security personnel did not fire live ammunition or teargas at the protesters.
Specifically, the governor said his attackers were “identified political thugs”.
In an earlier statement, his press secretary, Ismail Omipidan had claimed, “First death happened in a motorcycle accident prior to the arrival of the Governor at the protest ground. His arrival time was 2.35pm. The LAUTECH hospital confirmed receiving the victim who eventually died at 12.30pm – 2hrs earlier.
“The second death claim occurred at Oke-Ayepe which is several kilometers away from the protest ground and not on the route to the Government house. This happened at 4:35 over 30 mins after the Governor was evacuated from the violence-ridden protest ground and settled in the Government House.”
Egbemode stated: “Protests have been going on in the state for some days now, and there had been no attack on any government official since the beginning of the protest.
“However, today’s attack changed the narrative. It was not a spontaneous attempt. The attackers had it all planned. They had guns and other weapons. In fact, it was a woman who smashed the windscreen of the vehicle of the Secretary to the State Government, Prince Wole Oyebamiji where I was”.
She continued, “It is really sad that these people infiltrated the ranks of the peaceful protesters and took advantage of the Governor’s walk with the youths to execute their sinister intentions.
“It was simply a street coup to take out the Governor, his Deputy and the Secretary to the State Government, all of whom were exposed during the protest and had to be smuggled into vehicles when the attack was launched.”
