FORMER Super Eagles coach Augustine Eguavoen is due in Mali on Tuesday to sign a contract as the new head coach of Stade Malien.
According to reports in Mali, the former Super Eagles captain has been appointed by the Malian giants and he just needs to complete the formalities once he arrives in Bamako, the Mali capital.
Stade Malien are one of Mali’s two biggest clubs, and one if the most successful in Africa.
They are the current Malian champions and have won the Premier League in the country 22 times. They won the CAF Confederation Cup in 2009.
Eguavoen was a part of Nigeria’s golden generation of the Super Eagles who won the Africa Cup of Nations in 1994 and qualified for the country’s first World Cup in the same year.
After a playing career that saw him feature in Nigeria, Belgium, Russia and Malta, Eguavoen started coaching in Malta in the early 2000s.
The former defender, 55, was Super Eagles head coach between 2005 and 2007, and led the team to a third-place finish at the 2006 AFCON in Egypt.
He has also had coaching stints at the Golden Eaglets, the Nigeria U-23s, Enyimba, Bendel Insurance and Gombe United among others.
