Man City prevent Liverpool from taking top spot

LIVERPOOL passed up the opportunity to return to the top of the Premier League when they were pegged back by Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday night.

The champions were on track to become the third side on Sunday to be on top of the table after Tottenham Hotspur and Leicester City had taken turns as league leaders.

Egypt forward Mohamed Salah gave the hosts the lead in the 13th minute, scoring from the penalty spot after Senegal forward Sadio Mane was brought down in the Manchester City box.

The hosts responded 18 minutes later through Gabriel Jesus.

The Brazil striker tricked his marker in the Liverpool box and created space to poke past Alisson in the Reds’ goal.City had the chance to take the lead, but Kevin De Bruyne sent his 42nd minute penalty wide.

The penalty was awarded for a Joe Gomes handball.In contrast to the high-octane first half where both teams went at each other, the second half saw both teams more withdrawn and few chances were created.With the draw, Liverpool stayed in third place in the Premier League table with 17 points from eight games, while Manchester City are 11th with 12 points from seven games.

According to Sky Sports Statto, Liverpool have dropped seven points in the Premier  League this season after just eight matches, and it took 30 games to drop as many points last season.

Also, Manchester City’s 12 points after seven games is their fewest at this stage of a Premier League  season since 2008-09, when they had nine points.
