The Flying Eagles’ faint hopes of surviving at the WAFU U-20 tournament were extinguished on Saturday without them even kicking a ball.
The Nigerian team needed Ghana to beat Cote d’Ivoire by a two-goal margin for them to go through, but it was the Ivorians who won 1-0 on Saturday and topped the three-team group.
With the win, Cote d’Ivoire finished with four points, one more than Ghana who took second place with three points. Nigeria finished bottom of the group with just one point.
Ladan Bosso’s Flying Eagles had ended their group campaign in midweek with a 1-0 defeat to Ghana which followed the Nigerian side’s opening day 1-1 draw with Cote d’Ivoire.
Ghana and Cote d’Ivoire proceed to the semi-finals and continue their quest for tickets to the 2021 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations in Mauritania.
The Flying Eagles have thus been eliminated from the WAFU tournament, the AFCON and the 2021 FIFA U-20 World Cup.
