Former Liverpool manager Gerard Houllier has died at the age of 73, it was announced on Monday.
Frenchman Houllier managed Liverpool for six years and achieved great success.He also coached Aston Villa during his managerial career.
Houllier worked at French clubs Lens and Paris Saint-Germain as well as the France national team before he joined Liverpool in July 1998 as co-manager with Roy Evans.
Houllier took sole charge months later and led Liverpool to win the FA Cup, League Cup, UEFA Cup and UEFA Super Cup in 2001.
Liverpool mourned the passing of their late manager with a message on social media.
“We are mourning the passing of our treble-winning manager, Gerard Houllier,” the club tweeted.
“The thoughts of everyone at Liverpool Football Club are with Gerard’s family and many friends.
“Rest in peace, Gerard Houllier 1947-2020.”
Former Liverpool striker Michael Owen, who thrived under the Frenchman, paid an emotional tribute to Houllier on Twitter.
“Absolutely heartbroken to hear that my old boss, Gérard Houllier, has sadly passed away. A great manager and a genuinely caring man. #RIPBoss,” Owen wrote.
Houllier is the fourth prominent football personality to pass on in recent weeks after Diego Maradona, Papa Bouba Diop and Paolo Rossi.
