Arsenal director Edu: Arteta is doing a great job

ARSENAL manager Mikel Arteta has received the backing of the club’s technical director Edu despite the poor form of the side.

A section of Arsenal fans have called for the sacking of Arteta after the club’s worst start to a league campaign in 46 years, but Edu instead believes the Spaniard is doing well.

“Mikel is doing a great job,” Edu was quoted by the BBC on Tuesday.

“It’s normal and easy to be driven by results. But I can see the future, see where we go and the way we are building things on a daily basis. Everything here is right, everything here is working.”

Arsenal are 15th in the Premier League just five points above the relegation zone, their last Premier League win was on 1 November and they have lost four straight home league games for the first time since 1959.

However Edu, who played in midfield for Arsenal during the club’s successful past, expects success with Arteta.

“How many young players have started to get opportunities and perform quite well in the first team?” Edu said.

“I can see a big and beautiful future. It’s very strange to say that in this moment, but I have to be fair – that’s the way I see the photo”.

Arsenal players were booed off by the 2,000 fans at the Emirates on Saturday after their 1-0 defeat to Burnley, a game in which former captain Granit Xhaka was sent off and current captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored an own goal.

The Gunners have a testing run of fixtures over the Christmas period with league games against Southampton, Everton and Chelsea, all of whom are doing far better than Arteta’s side at the moment.
