Super Eagles and Leicester City midfielder Wilfred Ndidi has been voted King of the Pitch for 2019 at the Nigeria Pitch Awards, the organisers announced on Tuesday night at a ceremony in Lagos.
Super Falcons and Barcelona Femeni striker Asisat Oshoala emerged as the Queen of the Pitch.
Voting for the Nigeria Pitch Awards is done by over 100 sports editors and journalists across the 36 states of the country.
Votes cast are collated and audited by a professional accounting body.
The organisers explained that the seventh award ceremony initially scheduled to be held in March 2020 was postponed in line with COVID-19 protocols as outlined by the Presidential Task Force set up by the Federal Government.
Super Eagles and Kaizer Chiefs star Daniel Akpeyi was voted Goalkeeper of the Year, while Watford centre-back William Troost-Ekong emerged as Defender of the Year.
Ndidi beat off competition from Joe Aribo and Oghenekaro Etebo to retain the Midfielder of the Year award, claiming his second gong of the night.Super Eagles and Napoli centre forward Victor Osimhen was named Striker of the Year, winning ahead of Odion Ighalo of Manchester United and Samuel Chukwueze of Villarreal.
Nigeria Football Federation Vice-President Seyi Akinwunmi won the Sam Okwaraji Award for Commitment to Nigerian Football, and Gernot Rohr emerged as 2019 Coach of the Year.
Enyimba International were named Team of the Year and AITEO Group won the Corporate Sponsor of Football Award for 2019.
Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa won the Football Friendly Governor for the second year while Lagos State emerged winner of the State with the Best Grassroots Football Development Programme.
Johnny Edward of The Punch won the Football Journalist of the Year – Print category, while Olawale Adigun of Top Radio FM emerged winner of the Radio category.
In the TV and Online categories, Channels TV Sports Editor Austin Okon-Akpan and Goal.com’s Samuel Ahmadu won respectively.
