Ebere Eze: How Arsenal made me and my mum cry

Crystal Palace midfielder Eberechi Eze has described how he cried after he was released by Arsenal.

The 22 year-old star, who is eligible for the Super Eagles because of his Nigerian heritage, joined Palace from Queens Park Rangers for £17 million in August and has impressed in his first season in the Premier League.

He was let go by the Arsenal youth team in July 2011 when he was 13 and the pain of rejection cut deep for him and his family.

“I got scouted by a few clubs and that’s when I first went to Arsenal,” Eze told Premier in an interview published on Christmas Day.

“At a young age, it was hard, especially being released. Me and my mum cried, everyone was so upset – that’s all you know at that age.

“But looking back at it now, that’s the start of my journey and I’m grateful to God that’s how it went. If it wasn’t for that, I may not have got the resilience, bravery, to go and be who I want to be elsewhere. It’s shaped me to be who I am today.”

He joined Fulham youth after leaving Arsenal and has since played for Reading, Millwall, Wycombe Wanderers and QPR.

“I was coming to terms with how difficult it was going to be,” Eze added.

“That’s what it was for me, realising this is going to be a lot harder than I may have thought, getting a pro contract somewhere and becoming what I want to become.

“I knew that was a bit further than I once thought.”

The skillful midfielder has had a decent start to his Premier League career, playing 13 of Palace’s 14 games in the competition and contributing one goal and two assists.
