AGGRIEVED students, under the aegis of the National Association of Nigerian Students, on Thursday poured to the street to protest the alleged killing of a 400-level student of the University of Ibadan, Akolade Gbadebo, by an officer of the Oyo State Security Agency also known as Operation Amotekun.
The students were led by the Chairman, NANS Joint Campus Committee in Oyo Axis, Mayowa Opakunle.
The students, who were armed with placards with various inscriptions denouncing the killing of Gbadebo, were also chanting various protest songs to drive home their grievance.
The protesting students who arrived at the Secretariat at Agodi around 10am called on Governor Seyi Makinde to rein in Amotekun corps, saying the killing should be investigated thoroughly to unravel the personnel who fired the shot.
The protesters argued that Amotekun corps were trying to distort the facts by accusing the deceased of armed robbery in their reports to the police.
Giving reason for the protest, Opakunle said the killer of Gabdebo must be brought to book and justice should be served by not allowing the case to be swept under the carpet.
He said the students had observed that Amotekun corps had been making attempts to turned the case against the slain student or to make the people forget about the case.
He said, “The killing of Akolade Gbadebo should not be allowed to be swept under the carpet. Life is sacrosanct and nobody should be allowed to take the life of a fellow man illegally.
“The family of late Gbadebo is in sorrow at the time because of the incident. Some student union leaders went to Oyo town to find out how the incident happened but the same set of Amotekun corps still harassed and threatened to kill them.
“The governor should look into this case because he asked us to hold him responsible for any wrongdoing of Amotekun. He said that during the inauguration of the security outfit. It is painful to see this happen and we must do everything to stop them so that it won’t become a regular occurrence.”
The Executive Assistant to the Governor on Security Matters, Sunday Odukoya, who attended to the protesting students told them that Makinde was on the tour of some local government areas.
He, however, said the governor would attend to their request, saying Makinde would ensure that justice was served in the case.
