Ndidi stands out again as Leicester edge out Newcastle

Nigeria midfielder Wilfred Ndidi was again in impressive form as Leicester City defeated Newcastle United 2-1 at St James’s Park on Sunday to go within a point of the top of the Premier League table.

James Maddison and Youri Tielemans scored in the second half while Andy Carroll reduced the deficit late on, but the Super Eagles star stood out for his defensive work in the Leicester midfield.

Maddison opened the scoring 10 minutes into the second half, striking home from a Jamie Vardy assist from inside the Newcastle box.

Tielemans made it 2-0 with a spectacular strike from 20 yards in the 72nd minute.

Carroll made it a nervous finish with a volley with eight minutes left of regulation time.

Ndidi made more interceptions (six) than any other player on the pitch against Newcastle.

Only Dani Ceballos against West Brom (seven) has made more in a single game this season in the Premier League, according to Squawka.

Leicester climbed back above Tottenham Hotspur into third place with 30 points, although they have played a game more than leaders Liverpool and second-placed Manchester United.
