Fosu-Mensah leaves Man United for Bayer Leverkusen

DUTCH defender with Ghanaian heritage Timothy Fosu-Mensah has joined Bayer Leverkusen from Manchester United, both clubs confirmed on Wednesday.

The deal is for three-and-a-half years and the transfer fee is around €2m, according to reports.

“TRANSFER NEWS: Timothy Fosu-Mensah has joined Bayer 04 from Manchester United. Welcome to the Werkself, Timothy!” the German Bundesliga club tweeted.

Bayer Leverkusen chief Rudi Voeller, a former German international, said he was pleased to welcome the versatile player.

“Fosu-Mensah is a valuable addition to our squad,” he said.

“We are facing major sporting challenges in the coming weeks. For this we need resilient players who consistently deliver their top performance.”

Fosu-Mensah said he was eager to feature for his new club.

“I’m really looking forward to this team and working with Peter Bosz,” he said.

“The conversations with Bayer04 have convinced me that there are great prospects here. For me and for us as a team. It will be really exciting.”

Fosu-Mensah joined United’s youth team from Ajax and made his senior debut in 2016. He has however found regular playing time difficult to come by and a rash of injuries also affected his time at Old Trafford.

United also confirmed his exit with an official statement.

“Manchester United defender Tim Fosu-Mensah has completed a permanent move to Bayer Leverkusen for an undisclosed fee,” United announced on their official website.

“The 23-year-old will embark on a fresh chapter of his career in the Bundesliga after agreeing terms and passing his medical with the team currently sitting in third place in the German top flight.

“He has previously had loan spells away from Old Trafford with Crystal Palace and Fulham.”
