NIGER: Assembly to amend law to punish bandits’ informants

THE State House of Assembly has expressed the need to amend the law relating to kidnapping to provide adequate punishment for people who serve as informants to bandits in the state.

Speaker of the House, Abdullahi Bawa Wuse stated this when he led other members of the State Legislature to the Government House to commiserate with the governor on the recent abduction of Students and NSTA bus passengers recently.

“We have decided that by next week, we will amend the law to include with a view to giving informants the deserved punishment,” he said.

Wuse said the Legislative arm of government is worried about the recent and unfortunate happenings in the state and that it is aware Government is doing a lot to ensure the safe release of the kidnapped victims.

While advising the executive arm to reinforce meetings with traditional leaders and give them a marching order to be mindful of influx of strangers into their communities, the Speaker said the State Assembly is willing to help in any way possible to bring an end to the security challenges in the state.

The speaker, however, condemned the unfortunate incident of Kagara and other communities, adding that there was need to seek for God’s intervention.

In his response, Governor Abubakar Sani Bello commended the lawmakers for the show of solidarity with the State and welcomed the review of the law to provide adequate punishment for informants to bandits.

He decried various attacks being perpetrated by bandits in parts of the state and gave assurance that everything is being done to ensure the safe return of the students and passengers.

“Going forward, we have to put in place necessary measures to know the root cause of the security challenges in the State and how to address them” he said.

The governor disclosed that several meetings had been held with traditional rulers who were directed to use their structures to monitor strange activities in their domains and report to the appropriate authorities, adding that such meetings will be sustained.
