AFCON will be held every two years, Motsepe assures

THE Africa Cup of Nations will retain its two-year rotation, new Confederation of African Football Patrice Motsepe has assured.

The competition has been held every two years when possible since its first edition in 1957, but there have been calls in recent years for it to be organised every four years like the UEFA European Championship.

When asked in Johannesburg on Tuesday  if the two-year format be retained, Motsepe said: “AFCON , at present, must take place every two years.” He added, however, that there could be further discussions with partners.

Motsepe also reiterated his promise to visit the 54 CAF member associations in the next one year, and suggested more meetings with federation leaders.

Motsepe also promised to oversee significant progress in his first four-year term.

“I will hold two more meetings this year with all the presidents of CAF Member Associations and we will discuss urgent measures there,” the South African billionaire businessman said.

“I will not be the president of an organization which, in four years, will not have made significant, tangible, practical and accessible progress. It will not happen.

“We have to stop being pessimistic. It is important to identify our weaknesses and failures, and we will correct them.

“The future of the most continental organization is optimism, a positive attitude. We can and will succeed.”

The next AFCON is billed for Cameroon in 2022 after it was postponed from this year due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The last edition was hosted by Egypt.
