FA Cup: Rodgers banks on ‘confident’ Iheanacho, Vardy combination to beat Man United

LEICESTER City manager Brendan Rodgers has hinted that he will partner Jamie Vardy with Kelechi Iheanacho for Sunday’s FA Cup quarter-final against Manchester United.

Super Eagles forward Iheanacho has thrived alongside Englishman Vardy in recent games, the Nigerian scoring on three consecutive Premier League fixtures, including a hat-trick in last weekend’s 5-0 win over Sheffield United.

While responding to a question about Vardy during Friday’s pre-match press conference, Rodgers praised the combination of the two stars.

“Whatever system he [Jamie Vardy] plays in, he’s excellent,” he said.

“Even though he didn’t score last weekend, he was superb. Whether he plays in a front one, two or three, he’ll be dangerous. It’s nice to see his combination with Kels [Kelechi Iheanacho]”

Rodgers then extended his commendation to Iheanacho who has more than justified his place in the team on recent weeks.

“He’s got huge personality. I saw his interview, he scored a hat-trick and he thanked everyone else,” the former Celtic boss noted.

“It’s authentic and it’s really nice. He trains so hard. When players are confident, they play to a new dimension and that’s him at the moment.”

Manchester United are unbeaten in their last 14 away games in all competitions and Rodgers relishes the ‘challenge’ of ending that run at the King Power Stadium on Sunday.

He said: “They’re a fabulous team with players of real quality, but we focus on ourselves and we’re on the back of a really complete performance last week. We look forward to the challenge.

“My job since I came in was to create our own history here. We’d love to be the first (Leicester side to win it)”

Leicester are currently third in the Premier League table and when asked which he would prefer between winning the FA Cup and finishing in the top four positions, he replied: “Both. We’re very hungry. We’ll fight to the end to finish in the top four and we’ll fight to get to the cup final.”

Leicester City and Manchester United played a 2-2 draw the last time they met at the King Power Stadium in a Premier League clash.
