AFCON qualifiers: Musa, Aina, four others arrive as Super Eagles camp opens

THE Super Eagles training camp in Lagos officially opened on Sunday for the Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches against Benin Republic and Lesotho.

Six players arrived at the base on Sunday, led by captain Ahmed Musa.

The currently clubless Musa’s selection for the games stirred up controversy but head coach Gernot Rohr explained that he was not invited to be part of the team to feature in any of the matches.

Other players who arrived in Lagos on Sunday included England-based trio William Troost-Ekong of Watford, Ola Aina of Fulham and Semi Ajayi of West Brom.

While Troost-Ekong played in promotion-chasing Watford’s 3-0 win over Birmingham in the Championship on Saturday, Aina featured in Fulham’s 2-1 Premier League defeat to Leeds United on Friday night.

Ajayi had the weekend off as his club were already out of the FA Cup and had no game in hand to make up over the weekend.

Also in on Sunday were Galatasaray pair Henry Onyekuru and Oghenekaro Etebo. Both were involved in Galatasaray’s shock 4-3 home defeat to Rizespor in the Super Lig on Friday, Etebo playing the full game and Onyekuru coming on in the second half.

Most of the other players are expected in camp on Monday.

The Super Eagles will seal their spot in the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon if they beat Benin Republic in Porto Novo on Saturday.

Their final qualifier is against Lesotho in Lagos Tuesday next week.
