Kanu, Adepoju hail Super Eagles over ‘massive’ win against Benin Republic

TWO former Super Eagles stars, Nwankwo Kanu and Mutiu Adepoju, have sent congratulatory messages to the team following their qualification for next year’s Africa Cup of Nations.

The Nigerian side defeated neighbours Benin Republic 1-0 in Porto Novo on Saturday to seal first place in their qualifying group and confirm their participation at the continent’s showpiece tournament in Cameroon in 2022.

Genk striker Paul Onuachu came off the bench to score the only goal of the match in injury time as the Super Eagles ended Benin Republic’s eight-year, 17-match unbeaten run at home.

Kanu, who played in multiple AFCONs for Nigeria, hailed the team and described the win as ‘massive’.

“Congratulations. Congratulations 👏 my country people, massive win,” the Atlanta  Olympics gold medal winner tweeted.

“Up Super Eagles. We move #Nigeria #Africa #AFCON.”

Adepoju, who was a key member of the Super Eagles team that won the AFCON title in 1994 and qualified for Nigeria’s first-ever senior World Cup the same year, also congratulated Gernot Rohr’s men on social media.

“Congrats @NGSuperEagles,” the LaLiga ambassador in Nigeria tweeted.

The Super Eagles have 11 points from their five Group L games and will round off their qualifying campaign with a fixture against Lesotho in Lagos on Tuesday.

If the Nigerian side avoid defeat on Tuesday, they will end the qualifiers unbeaten.
