Ten Nigerian wrestlers to battle for Tokyo Olympics tickets in Tunisia

THE Nigerian team to the Africa/Oceanic Olympic Games wrestling qualifying competition will leave for Tunisia on Tuesday, the Nigeria Wrestling Federation has stated.

The qualifying competition will be held in Hammamet, Tunisia from Friday to Sunday.

The NWF has named a strong team of 10, made up of five male and five female wrestlers, led by former world No.2 and reigning Commonwealth champion Blessing Oborududu (68kg).

The other women joining the 10-time African champion are fellow Commonwealth gold medallist Aminat Adeniyi (62kg), Beach Wrestling world champion Blessing Onyebuchi (76kg), 2018 African Championship gold medallist medalist Bose Samuel (53kg) and youngster Adijat Idris (50kg).

For the men, national team captain and five-time African champion Amas Daniel (65kg) will be competing in the freestyle event along with former African champions Soso Tamarau (97kg), Ekerekeme Agiomor (86kg) and Ebikwenimo Welson (57kg), as well as four-time African Championships gold medallist medalist John Ogbonna (74kg).

The Nigerian wrestling team will be led by three coaches Purity Akuh, Victor Kodei and Happiness Burutu, as they compete for tickets to the Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan scheduled for July and August.

Former world No.1 Odunayo Adekuoroye (57kg) is the only Nigerian wrestler to have already qualified for the Tokyo Games when claimed bronze at the 2019 World Championships in Nur Sultan, Kazakhstan.
