Sanwo-Olu ‘excited’ for Super Eagles ‘homecoming’

GOVERNOR Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State is eager to host the Super Eagles as they tackle Lesotho on Tuesday evening, he said hours before the match.

The Super Eagles used to consider Lagos their home until 2001 when their games got taken around Nigeria as the National Stadium, Surulere fell into a sad state of disrepair.

They will be back for the first time in 20 years when they engage the Crocodiles in the final round of the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

“I am excited as for the first time in 20 years, we witness the homecoming of our dear Super Eagles as they play their AFCON qualifier at our state soccer homeground, the Teslim Balogun Stadium,” Sanwo-Olu said in a statement on his official Twitter account on Tuesday afternoon.

“Sports is an important part of our THEMES agenda for Lagos.”

The governor promised that his government will continue to give sports and sporting events proper backing in the state.

“We have invested in developing our sports infrastructure, setting forward a clear mandate and plan to ensure Lagos is the number one destination for all our sports teams,” he added.

“We have supported the Super Eagles in their journey to this AFCON and I congratulate them on qualifying.”

Sanwo-Olu then appealed to Lagos fans to give the national team their full support.

He said: “As you watch the match in your homes or as a guest at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, please cheer on the #SuperEaglesHomecoming as we take sports in Lagos to the next level.”

The match is scheduled to kick off at 5pm Nigerian time.
