AFCON draw: Super Eagles to know opponents in June

THE draw for next year’s Africa Cup of Nations will be held in June, according to information from the Confederation of African Football insiders.

Although CAF is yet to announce the date for the draw, it has been revealed that it will be held on 25 June most likely in Cairo, Egypt.

The tournament, initially scheduled for 2021 but postponed because of the Covid-19 pandemic, will be held in Cameroon in January 2022.

The Super Eagles of Nigeria are one of the 23 teams confirmed to participate in the tournament. The 24th spot will be determined between Sierra Leone and Benin Republic when they play their disputed qualifier rescheduled for June.

The other teams that have qualified include champions Algeria, hosts Cameroon, Burkina Faso, Cape Verde, new comers Comoros and Cote d’Ivoire.

The others include Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, Ethiopia, Gabon, debutants Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea Bissau, Malawi, Mali, Mauritania and Morocco.

Senegal, losing finalists in 2019, Tunisia, Sudan and Zimbabwe have also qualified.

The Super Eagles are expected to be one of the seeded teams for the draw.
