LAGOS: Sanwo-Olu unveils body-worn camera for LASTMA, VIO, others

By Samuel Benjamin

AS part of efforts aimed at ensuring transparency and accountability among law enforcement agencies in the state, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu yesterday launched the use of body-worn cameras by officers of the state law enforcement agencies.

At the launch held at the Lagos House Ikeja, Sanwo-Olu said that the device would enhance administration of justice, professionalism and eradicate abuse of power.

The governor said he was excited by the launch of first of its kind device in Nigeria, which was demonstrated on him.

He added that the advice would put the government in the best position to handle security, implement its THEMES agenda, eradicate abuse of power, ensure efficient  discharge of justice. It will also ensure officers of security agencies have necessary modern technological tools to keep the state safe.

Sanwo-Olu also urged the state’s law enforcement officers to team up and see the device as a new beginning in community engagements and surveillance while hoping that other  security agencies in Nigeria would take advantage of its benefits.

Also, the Governor approved a mass training for the State’s law enforcement personnel on the use of the body-worn cameras, ahead of the deployment of the digital tools for security operations across the State.

The three-day training, which will commence in May, will be facilitated by the state’s Law Enforcement Training Institute (LETI), headed by Prince Oyekan Falade. After the training, all state-funded law enforcement officers will be commissioned to wear body cameras for their operations.

Speaking earlier, the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice,  Moyosore Onigbanjo who was represented by the Solicitor General/Permanent Secretary, Kadijat Shittabey, said security is paramount hence the need for smart and proactive law enforcement agencies could not be over emphasised.

Head of Lagos State Law Enforcement Training Institute, Falade Oyekan, stated that the device was apt for Lagos as a mega city saying it could see and record any happenings and can be monitored from the control room.
