OSUN: Herdsmen machete female farmer for resisting grazing on plantation

IT appears  efforts of the government to put a permanent end to the farmers/herders crisis in the state have not been yielding the desired fruits as another farmer was allegedly attacked by suspected herdsmen yesterday.

The female rice farmer, identified as Amaka Okafor, was attacked two days ago on her farm located in Ayede Ogbese, Akure North Local Government Area of Ondo State.

It was gathered that the herdsmen met the woman on her farm and wanted to graze on the farm but the victim tried to stop them from destroying her rice plantation.

According to a source, the encounter led to an argument between them and the herdsmen allegedly inflicted machete cut injuries on the woman, leaving her unconscious on the farm and ran away.

The source said the 37-year-old woman was inflicted with machete cuts on her head and hands by the herders, adding that she was rushed to a hospital for treatment.

Confirming the incident, the Public Relations Officer,  Tee-Leo Ikoro, said the command had commenced investigation into the matter.

“The good news is that the victim could identify the assailants and we have begun investigation into it. The woman is recuperating at the hospital,” Ikoro stated.

Some herders in the Southwest have reportedly continued to kill and maim farmers with impunity for refusing to allow their cattle  graze on their farmlands.

Some residents of a community in Yewa in Ogun State relocated to Benin Republic  after being attacked and rendered homeless by suspected herdsmen.

About a month ago some Ifon  community chiefs in  Ose Local Government Area were invited to Abuja by the police for allegedly killing a cow belonging to a herdsman identified as Abdullahi, an allegation they described as false.
