Chelsea, City set to withdraw from European Super League amid fans’ protest

CHELSEA and Manchester City are on the verge of pulling out of the controversial European Super League, according to reports.

The Blues and Citizens were two of the six Premier League clubs among the 12 who announced the breakaway competition on Sunday night.

The Super League is designed to rival the UEFA Champions League with matches played in midweek among Europe’s richest and most successful clubs.

However, following unprecedented backlash from FIFA, UEFA, other ruling bodies, other clubs in the three countries where the Super League teams come from, and fans, Chelsea appear to have caved in.

The BBC reported on Tuesday evening, around one hour before the Premier League match
against Brighton at Stamford Bridge was scheduled to kick off, that Chelsea and City were ‘preparing documentation to request their withdrawal from the European SuperLeague’.

The other 14 Premier League clubs met earlier on Tuesday and issued a strong joint statement expressing their opposition to the formation of the Super League.

Also, hundreds of Chelsea fans defied the Covid-19 pandemic to converge outside Stamford  Bridge in protest against their club’s involvement in the Super League. 

Chelsea legend and a current employee of the club, former goalkeeper Petr Cech, was sent out to pacify the protesting fans just before the withdrawal news broke.
