Chelsea stun City to delay EPL coronation, Bayern win ninth straight Bundesliga title

CHELSEA staged a second-half Premier League comeback to defeat Manchester City 2-1 at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday.

Hosts City would have been crowned champions had they won, but they were undone by Hakim Ziyech and Marcos Alonso’s goals which cancelled out Raheem Sterling’s first-half strike.

In what was a dress rehearsal for the UEFA Champions League final (which is scheduled for 29 May in Istanbul, Turkey), City took the lead in the 44th minute through Sterling after Andreas Christensen misjudged a ball into the Chelsea box.
The hosts should have taken a 2-0 advantage into the break, but Sergio Aguero’s lame Panenka attempt from the penalty spot in added time was easily saved. The penalty had been controversially awarded after Billy Gilmour had been adjudged to have tripped Gabriel Jesus in the box.

Chelsea got back in the game in the 63rd minute when Ziyech turned in Cesar Azpilicueta’s assist, and could have taken the lead but for two tight offside calls that denied Timo Werner and Callum Hudson-Odoi goals.

The winning goal came in the second minute of injury time, Alonso sweeping home from Werner’s low cross to keep Chelsea firmly in the race for a top four finish.

The three points took Chelsea past Leicester City into third place with 64 points from 35 matches.

City, who are still clearly ahead in the table with 80 points from 35 matches, will be declared champions if second-placed Manchester United lose to Aston Villa on Sunday.

In Germany also on Saturday, Bayern Munich celebrated their ninth consecutive Bundesliga title and their 30th overall with a 6-0 destruction of Borussia Monchengladbach.

Robert Lewandowski scored a hat-trick, while Thomas Muller, Kingsley Coman and Leroy Sane netted the other goals for the perennial champions.

Bayern Munich had been confirmed as champions earlier in the day when RB Leipzig lost 3-2 to Borussia Dortmund, but the Bavarians added icing to their celebratory cake with the emphatic win.
