Ex-Eaglet Amoo wins historic Swedish Cup with Hammarby, grateful to Zlatan

FORMER Golden Eaglets forward Akinkunmi Amoo won his first piece of silverware in professional football on Sunday as Hammarby claimed the Swedish Cup.

Hammarby defeated Hacken 5-4 on penalties after full-time ended 0-0 to win the trophy, with Amoo a second-half substitute.

The 18-year-old, who featured for Nigeria at the FIFA U-17 World Cup in 2019, replaced Vladimir Rodic in the 60th minute and played his part in Hammarby’s big win.

After the victory, Amoo expressed his joy at winning and thanked Zlatan Ibrahimovic for supporting the team’s cause.

AC Milan star Ibrahimovic is a part-owner of the club.

“I am delighted to win the Swedish Cup with @Hammarbyfotboll and I am honoured to be part of this history,” Amoo tweeted.

“This is for our darling fans, for their amazing support. Excited to see the Boss @Ibra_official, he motivated the team. #Bajen.”

It is the first time in their 105-year history that Hammarby would win the Swedish Cup, although they have won the top league title before.

Amoo, who will clock 19 on 7 June, has scored seven goals and made one assist in 21 appearances since joining Hammarby in June 2020.

He has a contract until 2024.
