LMC fines Kano Pillars N7.5m, to deduct points over Covid-19 breach, crowd trouble

THE League Management Company has sanctioned Kano Pillars for breaching Covid-19 guidelines during Sunday’s Nigeria Professional Football League clash with Akwa United in Kaduna.

Thousands of fans were admitted into the Ahmadu Bello Stadium, Kano Pillars’ temporary home ground, for the match in a clear flouting of the behind-closed-doors rule.

The fans also encroached on the pitch and caused the match to be called off after a Kano Pillars goal was correctly disallowed for offside.

The match had to be concluded on Monday morning, ending in a 0-0 draw.

“Kano Pillars have been charged for breaching the NPFL Framework & Rules following the infraction in their Matchday 27 fixture vs Akwa Utd at the Ahmadu Bello Stadium, Kaduna on Sunday, June 13, 2021,” LMC said in an official statement on Monday.

“The Kano club have been charged for breaching the COVID-19 Protocol by admitting and/or permitting spectators and supporters into the venue.

“Pillars are also charged for encroachment after their supporters encroached onto the field of play, thereby disrupting the match.

“The club are further charged for failing to provide adequate security leading to failure in crowd control & restriction of access by unauthorized persons to restricted areas.”

The LMC imposed a total fine of N7.5m on the club for the various infractions.
Kano Pillars have also been punished with a suspended three-point deduction, which will be activated if they break any rules before the end of the season.

“The club also face a venue sanction of being banned from their Kaduna home ground and subsequently moved to another venue if there is a recurring event,” the LMC added.

“Kano Pillars have been directed to submit a revised security plan within 7 days and ensure they comply strictly with COVID-19 Protocol. All subject to approval by the LMC.”

The league body gave the club 48 hours to appeal the sanctions if they intend to.
