CRISTIANO Ronaldo scored his third goal of Euro 2020 on Saturday but Portugal were well beaten by Germany 4-2 in Munich.
The win brought Germany back into reckoning after losing their opening match to France while Portugal might need at least a draw in their final group game against France to stay in the competition.
Champions Portugal got off to the dream start at the Allianz Arena, Ronaldo tapping home after a devastating counterattack that began from the edge of their own box in the 15th minute.
Germany brought great cheer to the home crowd in the 35th minute when Ruben Dias scored an own goal under pressure from Kai Havertz.
Shockingly, Portugal scored another own goal four minutes later to give Germany the lead, Raphael Guerrero turning a cross into his own net.
Germany extended their lead six minutes into the second half, Havertz scoring from close range.
It became 4-1 on the hour mark as Robin Gosens headed home from a cross after he was left unmarked by the Portugal defence.
With that goal, Portugal became the first reigning champions in European Championship history to concede four goals in a single match in the competition.
It was also only the second time in 67 matches in major tournaments that Portugal would concede four goals in a match. The other time was also against Germany at the 2014 World Cup.
Jota reduced the deficit for Portugal in the 67th minute with a tap in on the goal line from Ronaldo’s assist.
Group F is finely poised going into the final round of games, with France on top with four points, followed by Germany and Portugal who both have three points. Hungary are bottom with one point.
