Olympics: Dare warns Nigerian athletes to avoid doping, breach of Covid-19 protocol

SPORTS minister Sunday Dare has advised Team Nigeria athletes to make the country proud at the Tokyo Olympics and avoid any action that will bring the nation into disrepute.

Dare charged the athletes to be worthy ambassadors by avoiding banned substances and adhering strictly to all Covid-19 protocol while bidding farewell to the first batch that left for Japan on Tuesday.

“As you are all aware, the circumstances leading to the Tokyo 2020 Olympics are unusual in many respects occasioned chiefly by the pandemic that has ravaged the entire human race,” the minister told the athletes.

“Your departure for these Games is evidence that working in unison we can collectively achieve whatever we set our minds to achieve as humans.”

The Games were delayed by a year due to the outbreak of coronavirus worldwide, and Dare harped on the need to follow the rules put on place to contain the spread of the extremely contagious virus.

“All the athletes and officials that will feature at the Games have been educated on Covid-19 compliance and anti-doping instructions,” he noted.

“I urge you all to adhere to these rules in order to compete safely and avoid the discomfort of Covid-19 isolation. I enjoin you to make the nation proud at the Games by competing clean and bring glory to your fatherland.”
