Olympics: Onyali leads first batch of Team Nigeria contingent to Japan

THE first batch of Team Nigeria’s contingent to the Tokyo 2020 Olympics will leave Abuja on Tuesday for Japan, the sports ministry announced on Monday night.

The ministry’s Director, Federation of Elites Athletes Department, Dr Simeon Ebhojiaye, revealed that the canoeing team of Ayomide Bello and her coach Ebenezer Ukwunna, as well as rower Esther Toko and her coach Regina Enofe, along with Nigeria Rowing Federation Secretary-General Olubunmi Oluode will depart through the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport via Ethiopian Airlines.

The Special Adviser on Sports to the minister and Olympic medallist, Mary Onyali, and the medical crew of Dr. Samuel Ogbondeminu, Messrs Okoh Joseph, Abdulsalam Shuaibu and Ekundayo Ogunkunle will also travel with the team on Tuesday.

An advance team of the Ministry of Youth and Sports Development departed for Japan via the Muritala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos on Monday.

The second batch of athletes and officials will depart on 13 July.

Nigeria will be competing in nine sports at the Tokyo Olympics, which run from 23 July to 8 August, while the country will feature in four sports at the Tokyo Paralympics from 24 August to 5 September.
