Tokyo 2020: Buhari to hand over Team Nigeria to NOC Monday

PRESIDENT Buhari will next Monday host Team Nigeria at the Presidential Villa in Abuja where he will hand over the Tokyo 2020 Olympics-bound athletes to the Nigeria Olympic Committee in accordance with tradition.

Sports minister Sunday Dare says the ceremony is important and inspiring for the athletes.

“We are keeping to the tradition of unveiling the team to the President who will in turn hand them over to the Nigeria Olympic Committee,” Dare explained.

“The unveiling of the official wear/equipment will be done by Mr. President.

“This is a very symbolic event meant to officially send off the team to the Games.

“This should also inspire the athletes and reinforce the fact that the Federal Government and the entire country are behind them.”

The second batch of Team Nigeria’s contingent to the Games will leave for Japan the day after the ceremony in Abuja.

The minister commended President Buhari for committing enormous resources towards Team Nigeria’s participation at the Olympics, which will officially open on 23 July in Tokyo.
