Thompson-Herah sets Olympic record as Jamaicans sweep women’s 100m medals

JAMAICAN made a clean sweep of the medals in a remarkable women’s 100 metres final at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics on Saturday.

Elaine Thompson-Herah won the gold medal, trailed by her compatriots Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and Shericka Jackson as six athletes finished under 11 seconds in one of the fastest races ever.

Thompson-Herah, who also won the 100m gold as well as the 200m gold at the Rio Olympics in 2016, returned a time of 10.61 seconds to beat the Olympic record of 10.63s.

She was neck and neck with her fellow Jamaicans until she pulled away in the final 20 metres to record the famous win.

Multiple-times Olympic gold medallist Fraser-Pryce finished second in 10.74s, followed by Jackson in third place (10.76s).

Africa’s only representative in the final, Cote d’Ivoire’s Marie Josee Ta Lou, missed out on the medal by finishing in fourth place in a time of 10.91s.

Incidentally, she also came fourth in the Rio Olympics final.

Switzerland’s Ajla Du Ponte (10.97s) and Mujinga Kambundji (10.99s) were fifth and sixth respectively.

United States of America’s Teanah Daniels came seventh in 11.02s, and Great Britain’s Daryll Neita was placed last in 11.12s.
