THE Super Falcons have been pitted against Morocco and Mali in the group phase of the Aisha Buhari Invitational Women’s Tournament.
The tournament is scheduled for Lagos in September, with six of Africa’s top women’s national teams participating.
Nine-time African champions Nigeria are the leading team in Group A, expected to ease past Morocco and Mali.
Morocco have never reached the semi-finals of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, while Mali’s best finish was at the last edition in 2018 when they came fourth.
Group B looks much stronger and tougher on paper, with heavyweights Ghana, South Africa and Cameroon all drawn there.
None of the teams in Group B have previously won the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations title, but they have all finished as runners-up multiple times.
Ghana have been silver medallists three times (1998, 2002 and 2006), Cameroon also thrice (2004, 2014 and 2016) and South Africa four times (2000, 2008, 2012 and 2018).
The top two teams from each group will qualify for the semi-finals of the 10-day tournament.
The Super Falcons and Morocco will open the tournament at the newly refurbished Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Onikan on the Lagos Island, while Teslim Balogun Stadium on the mainland will also host matches.
