Aisha Buhari Cup: Morocco shock Cameroon with late goal

MOROCCO caused the first upset at the Aisha Buhari Invitational Women’s Tournament on Thursday with a 1-0 win over Cameroon.

The Indomitable Lionesses of Cameroon are ranked 52nd in the world and second in Africa by FIFA, while Morocco’s Atlas Lionesses are eighth in Africa and 81st in the world.

However, Morocco defied Cameroon’s higher ranking and richer pedigree to snatch the win at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Onikan, Lagos.

Fatima Tagnaout struck with 13 minutes left on the clock to give Morocco the big win.

Goalkeeper Khadija Errmichi and defenders Zineb Redouani, Nahla Nakkach and Sabah Seghir fended off pressure from Cameroon before Tagnaout finished off the Central Africans on the counterattack.

Cameroon, who reached the final of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations the country hosted in 2016 (losing the trophy to Nigeria) and featured at the FIFA World Cup finals in France, were left stunned by the Moroccans, who have never reached the final of AWCON or qualified for the World Cup.

Nigeria’s Super Falcons had opened the Aisha Buhari Cup with a 2-0 victory over Mali on Wednesday, substitute Gift Monday scoring both goals late on.

On Friday, Ghana’s Black Queens and Banyana Banyana of South Africa will meet on Day 3 of the tournament at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena.
