Super Falcons here to win Aisha Buhari Cup — Oshoala

SUPER Falcons captain Asisat Oshoala has declared that the team’s sole mission is to win the maiden Aisha Buhari Invitational Women’s Tournament trophy.

The Nigerian side got off to a winning start on Wednesday with a 2-0 victory over Mali at the rebuilt Mobolaji Johnson Arena (former Onikan Stadium) in Lagos.

After a goalless first half, substitute Gift Monday of Lagos club FC Robo scored two late goals to hand the African champions victory over the stubborn Malians.

“I’m excited that we won such a difficult game,” Oshoala, who assisted the two goals, said during her post-match interview.

“I’m happy for the young players and how we are projecting the Nigerian Women’s Football League.
Gift has come up with two excellent goals and represented the Nigerian league well.”

Oshoala won the UEFA Women’s Champions League title with Barcelona last season and has won multiple Women’s Africa Cup of Nations trophies with the Super Falcons.

She is keen to add the Aisha Buhari Cup to her collection.

“This win is very important, we have our three points,” she added.

“We were not at our best in the first half, but the coach made changes and the plan worked.

“We try to win all our games in all competitions and we’re going for victory in our next game against South Africa. We want to win this cup.”

Four other teams are in the tournament along with Nigeria and Mali: South Africa, Ghana, Cameroon and Morocco.

Each team will play two matches and the champions will be determined by points.
