D’Tigress zoom past Cote d’Ivoire into Women’s AfroBasket semi-finals

D’TIGRESS continued their mission to win a third straight Women’s FIBA AfroBasket title on Thursday with victory against West African rivals Cote d’Ivoire in Yaounde, Cameroon.

The Nigerian ladies survived a late attempt at a comeback from Cote d’Ivoire to win 72-56, adding to their earlier victories against Mozambique and Angola.

Like in their two previous games, D’Tigress were quick off the blocks, racing to a 24-8 lead in the first quarter.

The 2017 and 2019 champions added to their 16-point lead by taking the second quarter 19-13.

It was 43-21 at half-time and Africa’s top-ranked team were coasting to the semi-finals.

However, the Ivorians mounted a bit of a fightback in the second half.

After losing the third quarter 16-14, they outplayed D’Tigress in the final quarter with a 21-13 score to prevent a proper blowout.

Still, D’Tigress will be happy with their win by 16 points as they chase the first Women’s AfroBasket ‘three-peat’ since the 1980s.

Ezinne Kanu was the game’s top performer with a game-high 17 points and six assists, while Victoria Macaulay contributed seven rebounds.

Salimarta Berte led the Ivorians in scoring with 13 points, with Zenabou Sieza adding nine rebounds.

The semi-finals are scheduled for Friday and the final for Sunday.
