Ebuehi, Okereke help Venezia past Fiorentina

NIGERIAN stars Tyrone Ebuehi and David Okereke were heavily involved on Monday night as Venezia secured their second Serie A victory of the season.

Promoted Venezia defeated Fiorentina 1-0 in a bad-tempered contest to finally earn a second win in their eighth league match of the season.

Mattia Aramu scored the only goal of the match against 10-man Fiorentina, who had Riccardo Sottil sent off in the 77th minute for two yellow cards.

Super Eagles defender Ebuehi was impressive in the right-back position for Venezia in the full 90 minutes he played.

Okereke, on the other hand, was a second-half substitute and he blew several chances to increase Venezia’s lead, including an open goal in added time with the Fiorentina goalkeeper stranded upfield.

The three points lifted Venezia out of the relegation zone to 15th, while Fiorentina are ninth.

Also on Monday night but in the Premier League, Nigerian midfielder Michael Olise came off the bench to make a goal contribution for Crystal Palace in their 2-2 draw with Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal took the lead after just seven minutes through Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang but Palace, managed by Gunners legend Patrick Vieira, struck twice in the second half through Christian Benteke and Odsonne Edouard to take a 2-1 lead.

Olise assisted Palace’s second goal as the visitors looked destined for a shock victory until virtually the last kick of the match with which Alexandre Lacazette scored an added time equaliser.

Arsenal are 12th in the Premier League table with 11 points from eight matches, with Palace 14th.
