Super Falcons grab first-leg advantage over Ghana in AWCON qualifiers

THE Super Falcons have put themselves in a good position to qualify for the 2022 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.

The nine-time African champions defeated Ghana’s Black Queens 2-0 in the first leg of their qualifying tie at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Lagos on Wednesday.

Forward Uchenna Kanu scored twice in the first half but the Nigerian ladies could not add to their advantage.

The second leg will be held in Accra on Sunday.

The winners of the tie will advance to the 2022 AWCON billed for Morocco.

The continental competition will also serve as the qualifying tournament for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

There were other AWCON qualifiers played across the continent on Wednesday with some interesting outcomes.

Cameroon and South Africa claimed away wins, the former beating Central African Republic 1-0 and the latter demolishing Mozambique 7-0.

There were two other away wins in Wednesday’s first-leg ties, with Egypt losing 6-2 at home to Tunisia and Namibia edging their hosts Tanzania 2-1.

Malawi and Zambia drew 1-1, Uganda defeated Ethiopia 2-0 and Zimbabwe beat Eswatini 3-1.
