Address terrorists by names, not unknown gunmen – DSS tells editors

THE Department of State Services has urged media practitioners in the country to avoid the nomenclature ‘unknown gunmen’.

Director-General, Yusuf Magaji Bichi, speaking at the opening ceremony of the 17th edition of the All Nigeria Editors’ conference in Abuja today, called on the media to address terrorists by their names.

Bichi was represented by the Services’ spokesperson, Peter Afunanya.

The conference with the theme, ‘’Media in Times of Crises: Resolving Conflict, Achieving Consensus,” brought together editors and media owners across the country, as well as their foreign colleagues to discuss the security challenges in the country and agree on the solution to the crisis.

In his goodwill message, Bichi also charged journalists to obtain actionable intelligence and avoid narratives that will divide the nation.

He said as editors, they are expected to use their platforms to make Nigeria better.

Similarly, the Inspector -General of Police, Usman Alkali, represented by Force Spokesman, CP Frank Mba, called for better synergy between the police and the media.

Mba said both professions are usually at the thick of things during insecurity, hence must learn to work together.
