Osimhen off with head injury, taken to hospital in Napoli’s first Serie A defeat

VICTOR Osimhen was not able to play the full match for Napoli on Sunday in their Serie A clash with Inter Milan.

The Super Eagles striker had a serious head injury and had to be taken off early in the second half as Napoli lost 3-2 to champions Inter Milan at the San Siro.

Reports from Italy said Napoli was taken to the San Raffaele Hospital in Milan after breaking his cheekbone in a collision.

Without their Nigerian talisman, Napoli fell to their first defeat of the season in their 13th Serie A game.

Piotr Zielinski gave visitors Napoli the lead in the 17th minute but Hakan Calhanoglu equalised for the hosts from the penalty spot eight minutes later.

Ivan Perisic and Lautaro Martinez extended Inter Milan’s lead to 3-1 before a late Dries Mertens strike gave Napoli some hope.

The league leaders were not able to pull even on the night and they remained on 32 points, ahead of second-placed AC Milan on goal difference, while Inter Milan are third four points behind.

Osimhen, who has scored nine goals in 14 appearances in all competitions this season, has been unlucky with injuries and illness since his arrival in Italy last year.

He had Covid-19 in December and had a campaign disrupted by injuries last season, including one to the head that led him straight to the hospital.
