WORLD football governing body FIFA has announced the nominees for its annual awards.
Eleven players were named on Monday as candidates for The Best FIFA Men’s Player of the Year, including past winners of the award.
Current holder of the award, Robert Lewandowski of Poland and Bayern Munich, is one of the leading contenders to retain his prize.
Lionel Messi, who has won the award more times than any player in history, and fellow regular winner Cristiano Ronaldo are also nominated, along with Egypt and Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah and Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema.
Chelsea stars Jorginho and N’Golo Kante as well as Paris Saint-Germain pair Neymar and Kylian Mbappe are also nominated, along with Borussia Dortmund youngster Erling Haaland.
FIFA also revealed the candidates shortlisted for awards in other categories, including Women’s Player of the Year, Men’s Best Coach, Women’s Best Coach, Men’s Best Goalkeeper and Women’s Best Goalkeeper.
Among the nominees for some of these awards are Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel, Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma and Barcelona Femeni star Jennifer Hermoso.
The winners will be revealed at an online ceremony on 17 January after votes from fans and national team coaches and captains.
FIFA explained that two expert panels – one for women’s football and one for men’s football – selected the candidates for each category.The top three for each category will be announced in early January.
