EPL: Chelsea, Liverpool win to keep up with City, Arsenal smash Saints

ALL of the Premier League’s top three teams won with one-goal margins on Saturday as the title race intensified.

After leaders Manchester City overcame 10-man Wolverhampton Wanderers 1-0 in the early kick-off via a Raheem Sterling penalty, Chelsea and Liverpool followed up with narrow victories of their own.

Chelsea defeated a spirited Leeds United side 3-2 in a match that had three penalties, while Liverpool also needed a penalty to beat Steven Gerrard’s Aston Villa 1-0 at Anfield.

Jorginho scored two spot kicks for Chelsea with Mason Mount adding the other goal, while Raphinha scored a penalty for Leeds United to open the scoring.

Leeds were heading for a draw until four minutes into injury time when Jorginho scored his second penalty after a foul on Antonio Rudiger. At Anfield, Liverpool were kept at bay until the second half when Mohamed Salah won and converted the penalty that earned them a hard-fought win.

Egypt forward Salah has now scored each of his last 15 Premier League penalties, just the second player to score as many consecutively in the competition, after Matthew Le Tissier (23 in a row between January 1994 and April 2000).

With the results, it is still very tight at the top of the table, with Manchester City at the summit with 38 points, one more than Liverpool and two more than Chelsea.

In the other Saturday afternoon kick-off, Arsenal eased to a 3-0 win over Southampton at the Emirates Stadium.

Alexandre Lacazette, Martin Odegaard and Gabriel netted for the Gunners who moved up to fifth with 26 points.
