KANO Pillars are the champions of the first Presidential Cup, a pre-season tournament held in Abuja.
The competition was held at the newly renovated Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja, to test run the facility.
Kano Pillars held Akwa United to a 1-1 draw on Sunday to emerge the tournament’s winners after accumulating the most points.
Ezekiel Bassey gave Akwa United the lead in the 23rd minute and the Nigeria Professional Football League champions were ahead for most of the match, until Pillars equalised late.
Kokoette Udoh struck for Pillars in the 86th minute to hand the Kano side thee trophy.
Pillars won the four-team tournament with seven points after two earlier wins over Sunshine Stars and Lobi Stars.
Akure side Sunshine Stars finished second with six points, while Akwa United came third with four points.
Lobi Stars finished bottom with no points following their three straight defeats.
The tournament, held from Friday to Sunday, was in preparation for the new NPFL season, which is billed to finally kick off on 17 December after a four-month break.
The Presidential Cup was also used to test the new pitch of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium and it held up impressively despite the heavy schedule.
