OYO: UI shuts down College of Medicine over Covid spike

THE University of Ibadan today announced that its College of Medicine would be closed due to surge in coronavirus cases.

A circular signed by its Provost, Prof Olayinka O. Omigbodun, said all physical activities in the college would cease with immediate effect.

The document further said the college will adopt virtual classes.

The circular partly reads, “Following the reported increase in the rate of Covid-19 infection among students of the College of Medicine, University of Ibadan who are resident in the Alexander Brown Hall (ABH), the College Expanded Executive Committee convened an emergency virtual meeting on Saturday, 18 December, 2021 at 8pm to discuss the situation and make recommendations to the Vice Chancellor.

“Upon receipt of the recommendations the Vice Chancellor convened an emergency meeting on Wednesday, 22 December 2021 and the following decisions were taken for immediate implementation:All physical academic activities should cease with immediate effect until further notice. All academic sessions should immediately proceed to virtual mode until further notice. (The situation will be reviewed regularly).

“The Management of the Alexander Brown Hall will immediately commence risk assessments and screening of all resident students.

“Students are encouraged to proceed home for the festive season to decongest the Hall.

“Arrangements are being put in place to isolate students who are Covid positive and provide treatment for those who are symptomatic”.
