Osimhen tests positive for Covid-19 again, risks missing AFCON

VICTOR Osimhen’s bid to participate in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon took a blow on Thursday.

The Napoli striker tested positive for Covid-19 just as he was about to fly out to Italy for medical checks, the Serie A club announced.

Osimhen was due to travel back to Italy from Nigeria, where he has been on holiday, to receive final clearance before coming back home to join the Super Eagles AFCON camp in Abuja.

But Napoli announced that their star striker would not be returning to Italy as he tested positive for Covid-19 before boarding from Nigeria.

The 22-year-old has been included in the Super Eagles squad for AFCON but was expected to return to Naples to assess his cheekbone injury on Friday, December 31.

He had broken his facial bones in a clash of heads during a Serie A match in November and had undergone reconstructive surgery.

He had been ruled out for three months, but had recovered more quickly than anticipated and he was going back to Italy to receive the green light from doctors to play in the African tournament with a protective mask.

However, the swab test he underwent in Nigeria before boarding on Thursday came back positive, and he did not leave the country.

The lanky striker will now have to be isolated for a number of days, preventing him from joining his colleagues in preparation for AFCON.

Osimhen had already tested positive for Covid-19 in December 2020, when he returned to Nigeria to celebrate his birthday.

The Super Eagles will kick off their AFCON campaign on 11 January against Egypt in Garoua.
