AFCON: Musa dismisses Salah threat, backs Siper Eagles to win fourth title

SUPER Eagles captain Ahmed Musa says he is not worried that Egypt have one of the world’s most in-form players, Mohamed Salah, in their squad.

Nigeria will open their 2021 Africa Cup of Nations campaign with a clash against Salah’s Pharaohs in Garoua, Cameroon next Tuesday.

Liverpool forward Salah is currently one of the most feared players in Europe, with his 23 goals in 29 matches in all competitions making him one of the most prolific stars in world football at the moment.
However, Musa is not too bothered by Salah, who scored against Chelsea on Sunday before jetting off for the AFCON.

“Everyone is talking about Salah, but if you look at our team we have lots of players our opponents should be worried about,” Musa said during a virtual press conference from Abuja on Tuesday.

“So we don’t have to think about Salah, they have to think about our own players. “They talk about Salah but we have players like Samuel Chukwueze and others on the wings who are very dangerous, so that’s football.“

Musa is one of only two players who were involved in Nigeria’s last AFCON triumph in South Africa in 2013, the other being central defender Kenneth Omeruo.

The Fatih Karagumuruk forward believes it is a possibility to win Nigeria’s fourth AFCON title in Cameroon.

“Definitely, it’s possible,” he said emphatically.

“In each tournament you will always see new players. I don’t think there is any new player going to the AFCON that has not been with us since day one.

“So we are together and we know each other but it’s just something little the coach needs to add to the team.

“I think we are ready because we have played lots of matches together and we are 100 per cent ready. We are not going to Cameroon to see the beauty of the country but to win.

“I remember during the qualifiers when we sealed qualification, we said we are not just going to the AFCON, we are going to come back with the trophy.”

The 2021 AFCON will begin on Sunday and end on 6 February, with 24 African nations participating.
