AFCON: Ebuehi arrives as Eguavoen expresses mixed feelings after Eagles win

TYRONE Ebuehi landed in Garoua, Cameroon on Friday night to join his Super Eagles colleagues for their 2021 Africa Cup of Nations campaign.

The Venezia full-back’s arrival brought the number of players in the Nigeria camp to 26, with only Jamilu Collins still being expected.

The team is resigned to having 27 of the 28 players allowed for the tournament, with Odion Ighalo being held back by his Saudi Arabian club Al Shabab.

The Super Eagles are in Group D for the African showpiece alongside Egypt, who they face on Tuesday, Sudan and Guinea-Bissau.

The Nigeria team defeated Cameroon’s top flight champions Coton Sport 2-0 in a tune-up match on Friday, with Ahmed Musa and Samuel Chukwueze on the scoresheet.

Although interim head coach Austin Eguavoen was pleased with the result, there were still aspects of the performance that he felt needed work.

“The Eagles were impressive,” Eguavoen told the team’s media channel.

“We played two sets of teams in each half to see how the players would cope with the weather conditions but they struggled a little bit. Fatigue also set in at some point.

“In terms of ball possession and movement, I was so pleased, and winning the game was good for the team.

“We missed a lot of chances but it is a practice match and nobody wanted to go in full force, so we played safe throughout to avoid injuries.

“Arriving in the box with fewer players is not so good and that is what we will be working on in the next few days.”

Nigeria’s first game in Garoua is against Egypt, followed by Sudan on 15 January and Guinea-Bissau four days later.
